Interfaces Beyond the Desktop

Due: October 31, 2025

For this assignment, you will explore interaction that extends beyond traditional desktop interfaces. Choose between creating an XR (Extended Reality) experience using tools like Scratch, p5.js, or A-Frame, or building a Physical Computing device that integrates digital and physical inputs/outputs.

XR Projects can include:

  • An immersive 3D environment
  • An augmented reality face filter
  • A virtual sculpture
  • Or another interactive sensory experience

Physical Computing Projects might include:

  • Creative tools
  • Assistive technologies
  • Wearable tech
  • Interactive sculpture
  • Etc.

You may work individually or in small groups, but everyone must document and submit their own work.

Synesthetic Soundspace (XR – p5.js Immersive Experience)

Synesthetic Soundspace transforms Spotify’s audio features into an immersive, data-driven sound sculpture. Each song becomes a floating circle whose height represents danceability, size reflects energy, and color encodes valence (mood). Clicking a circle plays a tone mapped to the song’s emotional signature, blending visualization and sound into a multisensory XR environment built entirely with p5.js and p5.sound.

Artist Statement

Synesthetic Soundspace explores how quantitative musical attributes can form an expressive interface. Built with p5.js and p5.sound, it maps Spotify’s audio feature data into a sensory space where users can both see and hear each song’s emotional profile. The project extends interaction beyond the desktop by creating a hybrid environment of sight, sound, and data that users can navigate intuitively.
